The Aviation Firefighter Initial course is aimed at personnel who are looking to take up the role of Aerodrome Firefighter.
The course aims to provide knowledge and skills to comply with the requirements of the Civil Aviation Authority and the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
Including the CAP 168 – Certificates of Competency, CAP 699 Standards for the Competence of Rescue and Firefighting Service (RFFS), and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Document Annex 14 and document 9137-AN/898 Airport Services Manual Part 1, Rescue and Firefighting and EASA as an AMC.

The Firefighter Initial course syllabus includes:
- Understand and put into practice the principles of (DRA) Dynamic Risk Assessment and Safe Person Concept.
- Understand the appropriate actions to take and the tactics and techniques that could be employed at aircraft accidents and incidents having discussed aircraft accident or incident case studies.
- Utilise a range of Primary and Secondary medias currently in use for aviation firefighting
- Prove competence in the use of Fire Service appliances and equipment during a range of simulated aircraft accidents or incidents
- Work as part of a team, understanding and showing the required skills to successfully achieve the required aims and objectives.
The (SLP) structured learning programme will be formally assessed via written, oral and practical assessments. On successful completion, the individual will be issued with a certificate of competence highlighting the units achieved in line with CAP 699. Valid for 4-years.

The Firefighter Revalidation course is intended to deliver refresher learning and progress opportunities to support and maintain individual’s competence in the aerodrome firefighter role.
This course aims to provide technical and practical training in order to comply with requirements of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) CAP 699 standards for the competence of Rescue and Firefighting services and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 14 Airport Services Manual Part 1 (Rescue & Firefighting).

- Correctly using the correct tactics and techniques at an aircraft accident / incident

This JOIFF accredited Aviation Firefighter Bridging course is aimed at personnel who have previously completed an ex-forces, MOD Firefighters basic recruits course, or a LAFB Firefighter course.
They should also be able to demonstrate and prove their competence in the core skills i.e. knowledge, understanding and practical elements of a Firefighter and be qualified and competent Breathing Apparatus wearer.
The aim of the course is to provide the necessary acquisition of knowledge and understanding, through delivery of a SLP, whereby individuals will gain the skills to competently act in the Firefighter role at aircraft accidents/incidents, which will satisfy the laid down standards in the AFF units 1-12 defined in CAP 699.

The Firefighter Bridging Course objectives include:
- Utilise the principles of dynamic risk assessment and safe person concept.
- Define primary and secondary media tactics used for firefighting.
- Specify tactics and techniques based on aircraft accident or incident case study(s).
- Demonstrate core Firemanship practical skills (hose running, ladder drills, knots & lines)
- Demonstrate competence in application in the use of fire service equipment in ‘live’ fire scenarios.
- Demonstrate the appropriate tactics and techniques used when dealing with various simulated aircraft accident/incidents.

The Supervisor Initial course is for individuals who are currently in a Crew Commander role and possess proven leadership and supervisory skills.
The aim of this structured programme is to provide learning opportunities for personnel who will undertake the Supervisory role of Watch/Incident Commander at an aircraft incident.

- The planning of training in accordance with CAP 699
- The legislative back ground to the RFFS provision at licensed aerodromes
- The principles with Accident Investigation following an incident
- The principles of Incident Command / Scene Management including post incident issues
- The ability to manage an incident to its safe successful conclusion
- The Command and Control issues relating to BA
- The environmental issues that you may face following an aircraft incident
- How human factors can impact upon performance in the work place

The Supervisor Revalidation course is for individuals who are currently in a Supervisory role and possess proven leadership and supervisory skills.
This course provides delegates with the opportunity to validate the maintenance of competencies that are required for the Incident Command Supervisory role of at an aircraft incident.

The Crew Commander Initial course is intended to deliver acquisition/refresher education and progress opportunities to support their commanding Officer in effecting command and control at aircraft accidents / incidents.
This course provides delegates with the learning opportunities for personnel who may be required to support their commanding Officer in effecting command and control at aircraft accidents / incidents.

The Aviation Crew Commander Incident Command Course Objectives include:
- Defining the role and responsibility of the Crew Commander within the incident command system
- Leadership
- Managing crew safety
- Effective communication skills
- Effective decision making
- The ability to safely and successfully manage a replicated incident sector

The course is designed for individuals who have prior knowledge/experience of working at a low category aerodrome (Cat 1 or 2) or are taking on a position of greater responsibility for the response to aircraft accidents/incidents.
This course will enable delegates to gain the necessary acquisition of knowledge and understanding, through delivery of a SLP, whereby individuals will gain the skills to competently act in the role of Supervisor at Low Category aircraft accidents/incidents, as expressed in CAP 168, Chapter 8, Appendix 8B.

- Aerodrome Legislation, Emergency arrangements (including Interoperability), ICS (Incident Command), and guidance documents
- The Management of Firefighting Media.
- The tactics and techniques based on aircraft accident or incident case study(s) (both fixed wing and rotary).
- Carrying out a Risk Assessment and safety in the workplace.
- Managing a training programme and conducting briefs/debriefs.
- The application in the use of fire service equipment in ‘live’ fire scenarios.
- The appropriate tactics and techniques used when dealing with various simulated aircraft accident/incidents.

The Aviation Low Category Supervisor Revalidation course is aimed at individuals who have already attended a Low Cat Supervisor Initial Course and, are actively carrying out this role.
This course will enable delegates to demonstrate the prior acquisition of knowledge and understanding, through delivery of a structured learning programme (SLP), whereby individuals can evaluate their skills to competently act in the role of Supervisor at Low Category aircraft accidents/incidents, as expressed in CAP 168, Chapter 8, Appendix 8B.
